Usingsystemmanagement

Yourcomputerisdesignedformanageability,sothatyoucanredirectmoreresourcestobettermeetyour
businessobjectives.
Thismanageability,knownastotalcostofownership(TCO),enablesyoutoremotelyoperateclient
computersinthesamewayasyouoperateyourowncomputer,suchasturningonaclientcomputer,
formattingaharddiskdrive,andinstallingaprogram.
Oncethecomputerisconguredandoperational,youcanmanageitbyusingthesoftwareandthe
manageabilityfeaturesthatarealreadyintegratedintotheclientcomputerandthenetwork.

TheUEFIBIOSofyourcomputersupportsaninterfacecalledSystemManagementBIOS(SMBIOS)
ReferenceSpecication,version2.6.1.SMBIOSprovidesinformationaboutthehardwarecomponentsof
yourcomputer.ItistheresponsibilityoftheUEFIBIOStoprovideinformationaboutitselfandthedeviceson
thesystemboard.ThisspecicationdocumentsthestandardsforgettingaccesstothisBIOSinformation.
PrebooteXecutionEnvironment
ThePrebooteXecutionEnvironment(PXE)technologymakesthecomputermoremanageablebyenabling
thecomputertostartfromaserver.YourcomputersupportsthepersonalcomputerfunctionsthatPXE
requires.Forexample,withtheappropriateLANcard,yourcomputercanbestartedfromthePXEserver.
Note:TheRemoteInitialProgramLoad(RIPLorRPL)functioncannotbeusedwithyourcomputer.
WakeonLAN
ThenetworkadministratorcanturnonacomputerfromamanagementconsolebyusingtheWakeon
LANfeature.
WhentheWakeonLANfeatureisenabled,manyoperations,suchasdatatransfer,softwareupdates,and
FlashupdatesoftheUEFIBIOS,canbedoneremotelywithoutremoteattendance.Theupdatingprocess
canperformafternormalworkinghoursandonweekends,sothattheusersarenotinterruptedduringwork,
andtheLANtrafciskepttoaminimum.Itsavestimeandincreasesproductivity.
Note:IfthecomputeristurnedonthroughWakeonLAN,thecomputerstartsfollowtheNetworkBoot
sequence.
AssetIDEEPROM
TheAssetIDEEPROMcontainsinformationaboutthecomputercongurationandtheserialnumbersof
thekeycomponents.Italsoincludesanumberofblankeldswhereyoucanrecordinformationabout
theendusersinyournetwork.
